George Washington High School Key Club's Annual Food Drive
by Vicki Jenkins

The second period Advance Algebra/Trigonometry Class of 2008-2009 at George Washington High School, pictured here, received the annual Golden Gobble Award. The class, taught by Ms. Joan Moore, earned the Award by collecting 818 cans of food and $138 in cash to benefit God's Storehouse in the Key Club's Annual Food Drive. The front row of the picture, left to right, are Hannah Moore, Paige Swanson, Lakrysta Ebarb. In the second row are Philip Dumont, Leigh Knaus, Hannah Koitz, Quentin Reid, Tony Ayala and the third row includes Joseph Francisco, Salmon Khan, Kerstie Dehart, Christian Clifton, and Jonathan Fowlkes followed by Audrey Savage, Julie Eggleston, and Chandler Tyrrell in the fourth row and Randall Atkins, Will Booker, and Taimour Khan in the back row. The generous efforts of these outstanding students to help those in our community needing a little extra help are greatly appreciated and will long be remembered by each of them.

The Golden Gobble Award was created as a new tradition at GWHS in recent years. It includes a golden turkey trophy with a wing span of 24 inches that stands just as tall. Each year the trophy is awarded to the most generous class in the Key Club's Annual Food Drive. The Key Club is a Kiwanis youth sponsored program. The Golden Gobble trophey is proudly displayed in the GWHS trophy case, where it can be seen by everyone in the school. On one side, it is flanked by a framed certificate that names each student in the class and a picture of the class on the other. No one will forget the accomplishments of Ms. Moore's 2007 and 2008 classes, each having won the annual Golden Gobble Award. The school's administration is committed to recognizing student achievement of all levels and supports the Golden Gobble Award. The tradition will spur other classes to be generous in helping others as they strive for the Golden Gobble Award honor.
