Kiwanis Club Of Woodbridge, Virginia, Hosts SLP Training Session

Submitted by: Al Knehans; Supporting data provided by: Officers, NOVA, WB Campus, CKI Club

On October 5, 2010, the Woodbridge, VA, Kiwanis Club hosted its second annual training session for Faculty Advisors and Club Officers of its Service Leadership Program (SLP) Clubs. The session was held at the Hylton Boys & Girls Club in Dale City, Virginia, beginning at 3:30 pm and lasting for almost two hours. The officers of the CKI Club at NOVA, Woodbridge (VA) Campus, did an outstanding job of presenting an overview of club staff officers functions and responsibilities and, then, conducting an open discussion session

The training session began with a discussion the following topics:

  • the idea and concept behind Circle K International
  • relations within the Kiwanis family
  • the duties of the executive board (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, public relations specialist)
  • the overall structure of CKI (club level, district level, international level)
  • individual club structure (executive board, senators, members)
  • recruitment ideas
  • service projects and their organization (ie. volunteering at the Action in the Community Through Service (ACTS) shelter, fundraisers at school, etc.)
  • various CKI events, ie: Fall Membership Rally, District Convention, International Convention
  • dues structure (as well as the concept of service vs administrative accounts)

The open discussion session included the following topics:

  • how to encourage members to show up for meetings
  • how to encourage members to pay dues
  • how to best keep record of who paid dues
  • solving of problems that may arise within the executive board

The results of the training session were considered so successful, that it was decided to continue to conduct it on an annual basis; perhaps, near the end of the preceding school year, during the summer break, or very earlier in the school year, which will require further discussion.

For more details on the training session, contact members of the CKI, WB Campus at: novawoodbridgecki@gmail.com.
