LaPlata Club

by Judy Gorney

Taste of Laplata. Sunday. October 24, 2010 was a great day in Laplata, Maryland and a great day for the Kiwanis of Laplata! The Club was out in full force at the Second Annual Taste of Laplata where local restaurants and businesses presented samples of food for residents to try. The town hired a band to play and set up activities for the children to keep the children busy while their parents snacked. Members Donna Avery, Melody Stahl, Emily Ferren, Jim Gorney, and Judi Gorney helped to raise funds for our Club by selling raffle tickets and our 2010 Christmas ornament, a replica of Habre de Venture, the house of Thomas Stone. The Thomas Stone National Historic site is only minutes from the Town of Laplata. In addition, we were able to talk to many residents and politicians about the work that Kiwanians perform in the community. Our Club has already committed to working at this festival again next year.

If you are interested in purchasing an ornament from the Kiwanis of Laplata, call 301-753-1800.

LaPlata Club YCPO Project: Blankets
! On September 19, 2010, the Kiwanis Club of LaPlata met to work on a "Young Children: Priority One" project. This was our second annual blanket making day. We are planning on presenting our double-sided fleece tag blankets to Maureen Jenkins, from Civista Health Care's nursery again, this year. After presenting these blankets to her last year, they were then given to children who might have an extended stay at the hospital or to children who would not have a special blanket to come home to. We felt these children would be comforted and happy having one of our handmade blankets. In attendance were club members, Judi Gorney, Linda Kandel, (President Elect); Emily Ferren, (President); Melody Stahl, Sharon and John Reith, (Past President); and Gale Crooks. Working together, we made 14 blankets that will undoubtedly come in handy. As you can see from the pictures, it was a successful project. We will be presenting the blankets to Maureen Jenkins at a future meeting.
