Cape Henlopen Food Basket

by Rosemary Cummings

Rehoboth Beach Kiwanians and K-Kids greeted shoppers at the Super Giant in Rehoboth Beach Saturday October 9. Working from 8AM until Noon, the volunteers collected more than six grocery carts filled with canned goods, pasta, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, and other staples. When volunteers from the Cape Henlopen Food Basket and the Kiwanians unloaded the fully loaded van, they estimated the groceries were worth more than $2,000. K-Kids Cruz Harmon and John Stubbs reported at their meeting the next Tuesday how they asked customers to donate an item or two. Each told the K-Kids in their Club that their service time was "fun." Customers included neighbors, friends, tourists, and even visiting Kiwanians from other states who stopped to chat. In November, Kiwanians and SLP members plan to collect groceries "South of the Indian River Bridge" in Ocean View, Millville, and Clarksville for the Selbyville Food Pantry. Rehoboth Kiwanis adopted this monthly service project when they learned how many local people were in need. The Selbyville Pantry reported they completely empty the pantry the third Saturday of each month.
