La Plata High School's Key Club - Service for Success
by Chelsea Stahl, Pres.

To revitalize is to impart new life or vigor to something. La Plata High School Key Club was indeed, revitalized this year and began their journey to finding success in service. "After several years of inactivity, LPHS Key Club has become one the premiere clubs in Division 22, in my humble opinion", stated president Chelsea Stahl. She is a junior at La Plata and is very passionate about Key Club and what it stands for. She, with the help of fellow officers, school administration, club sponsor, parents, La Plata Kiwanis members and above all; incredible Key Clubbers, has transformed the club into a caring, "key" service group in the Charles County community and Key Cub Division 22. The club has over 40 members and, thus far, has donated over 300 service hours to various projects such as:

  • Hosting several fundraisers for UNICEF and donating over $250.00
  • Providing monthly homeless shelter dinners at Angel's Watch Regional Women's Shelter
  • Adopting a road in the town center of La Plata, coinciding with Green is Key. They clean it every other month
  • Supporting the Civista medical center, by manning positions at their "Cycle Tour" and "Crab Feast.
  • Supporting the Charles County Hospice by helping set up for their annual "Festival of Trees" held at the JC Hall
  • Decorating and delivering Gingerbread houses to the Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in December of 2008
  • Holding a Penny War at school, in which they raised over $300.00 for Heifer International
  • Hosting a Book Drive for "BooksFirst!" in which the school and community donated over 100 books
  • Collecting 25 dresses for Amber's Closet, the Lt. Governor's project
  • And working on other projects, too!

The La Plata High School Key Club hopes to wrap up its year with a trip to District Convention, one final homeless shelter dinner, a road clean up and an end of the school year banquet being held to honor its Key Leaders and outstanding Key Clubbers! (But don't be surprised if it doesn't end there. Look for them to be out in the community this summer volunteering and holding meetings to discuss new ways to serve in their community next school year!!)
