Baltimore Club Donates $2000 to Help Seniors
Stay Fit
by Gayle Adams
The Kiwanis Club of East Baltimore 's outreach to the community extends to the Essex area and beyond. On March 13th, members of the club presented a check for $2000 for a Diamond Sponsorship for the Essex Senior Center's new exercise studio. Kiwanis Club president Sidney Minor expressed the club's commitment to helping the community and noted that she looks forward to the exercise studio's ribbon cutting. The Senior Center recently launched their campaign to raise funds for the exercise studio and is asking local businesses and organizations for support.
The gift for the Kiwanis sponsorship comes from a fund generated through the Kiwanis Gift Shoppes at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, the Kiwanis Wellness in the Community Fund. It is used to promote a variety of healthy activities in the community. Hospital volunteers help staff the non-profit gift shops run by a Kiwanis Board, and all of the sales proceeds are used for hospital and health programs. If you are interested in volunteering in the gift shops, please call 410-550-0627.
This gift is one of the ways that the Kiwanis Club supports the Essex-Middle River community. Each year the club also provides scholarships for students to Camp Invention, held at Hawthorne Elementary School. The Club also funds the Kiwanis Burn Prevention Education Program, where a retired firefighter from Hopkins Bayview goes into local schools to teach fire and burn prevention classes.
