Beach-Grass Planting Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis
Family Volunteers
by Rosemary Cummings
Saturday
March 21 at 9 AM., what started as a vast
expanse of gray sand and blue sky beside
the Atlantic Ocean, near the historic Delaware
Indian River Life Saving Station became
a vast mat of beach grass plants at noon.
This transformation was due to the strong
arms and hard work of many Rehoboth Kiwanis
family members. Volunteers including Rehoboth
ES and Lord Baltimore ES K-Kids, Cape Henlopen
and Indian River HS Key Clubs, Kiwanis
members, family, and friends worked at
the annual beach grass planting which the
DNREC Division of Soil and Water Conservation
hosts. More than 50 volunteers turned out
on the bright sunny, yet windy day that
proved to be much fun for old and young.
Many students were curious to explore the
beach where they worked last year before
a Nor'easter cut into the dunes. The grass
planted this year will protect the new
dune created since the May 12, 2008 storm.
Some members did dual service as members
of their Cub Scouts pack or their school's
Environmental Club, but they all agreed
to return next year.
