Poquoson Kiwanis Selects Teenager of the Year Nominee

by Joe Discenza

The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson welcome their nominee for 2009 Teenager of the Year, Megan Nickerson, at their weekly breakfast meeting, after learning that Megan had recently won the Division 23 nomination.

Megan is a senior at Poquoson High School and currently stands number 6 in her class with a 4.25 grade average.

Megan is Head Captain varsity soccer, co-captain varsity field hockey, Class Secretary, Secretary of the Spanish Honor society, and was Co-Captain of Junior Varsity Field Hockey as a freshman.

She was selected as Female Athlete of the Fall Season as a Junior and was elected Homecoming Queen as a Senior. Megan is also a music enthusiast and made All-District Chorus for three years and received the Chorus Showmanship Award as a Junior.

Ray Vernall, retired Poquoson School superintendent and member of the selection committee, introduced Megan to the club’s membership. “I have been on many, many selection committees,” he said, “but I have never seen such an outstanding leadership resume like Megan’s.”

With the initial selection as the Poquoson nominee, the Kiwanis club awarded her a $1,000 scholarship. Winning the division 23 title netted an additional $500 scholarship.

Division 23 consists of nine clubs in the Virginia Peninsula and Middle Peninsula. Final selection for Kiwanis Capital District Teenager of the Year, which carries a $2,000 prize, will be announced in July.

Miss Nickerson will be attending the University of Richmond to study business and marketing in the Fall.
