County Students Participate in Grundy Kiwanis Government Day
by Rita Rife
On March 24th the Grundy Kiwanis Club held its annual ‘Government Day’ at the Buchanan County Courthouse. The event consisted of a mock Board of Supervisor’s Meeting conducted by local high school students. All five county high schools were represented as well as Prater District Supervisor and former educator Steve O’Quinn and Assistant County Attorney Lee Moise.
With Mr. O’Quinn and Mr. Moise providing guidance the students worked through a series of agenda items, many of which closely resemble actual Buchanan County issues. They were instructed in the use of parliamentary procedure and adapted to it very quickly as they utilized it to conduct the meeting. The students addressed eight separate issues, ranging from the imposition of a county leash law to the establishment of a farmer’s market in every district.
