Millsboro Terrific Kids Accomplish Over 7,500 Good Deeds

submitted for Greater Millsboro Club by Rosemary Cummings

In ceremonies held June 9 at East Millsboro Elementary and June 10 at Long Neck Elementary, the Greater Millsboro Kiwanis Club awarded certificates and other prizes to first and second graders as part of its 15th annual Terrific Kids Program. The awards were given to those students who reached 25 or more merits for demonstrating a positive attitude and good character, and for helping others and doing good deeds.

In the Kiwanis Terrific Kids Program, students receive prizes for the number of merits they earn, including stickers, pencils, magnets, bookmarks, and McDonald’s coupons. For earning 25 or more merits, students received a program certificate and were entered in a drawing for Leapster educational games. The Greater Millsboro Kiwanis Club supplied the awards, thanks to local sponsors including Meoli Company McDonald’s.

The Kiwanis Terrific Kids Chairperson this year was Marianne Smith. Program coordinators at the schools were Assistant Principal Kelly Dorman at East Millsboro Elementary and teacher Kathy Breznican at Long Neck Elementary.

Over 300 students at both schools combined received recognition, for a total of over 7,500 good deeds accomplished throughout the school year. A list of "TERRIFIC" qualities includes being Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive, and Capable.

In the grand prize drawing for the Leapster games, winners at East Millsboro Elementary were Sarah Craft and Camden Keeler in first grade, and Amy Wong and Will Kenney in second grade. Leapster winners at Long Neck Elementary were Jenna Cave and Brett Jenkins in first grade, and Sharnae Harmon and Joseph Walker in second grade.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. The Greater Millsboro Kiwanis Club meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday each month at 6 p.m. at the Georgia House Restaurant in downtown Millsboro.
