Gov. Dudey Visits Divs 12 and 23

by Robert Elsass

WILLIAMBURG VA, June 7, 2010 --  Capital District Governor Don Dudey visited Kiwanians in Divisions 13 and 23 (on the Virginia Peninsula) on June 7.   More than 105 Kiwanians and their family members from the clubs in the two divisions gathered in Williamsburg to meet with him and enjoy the fellowship of Kiwanis.

During the picnic dinner, Governor Dudey encouraged club presidents to motivate their members toward increasing membership and service in their communities.  He said that Kiwanis is not alone in experiencing declining membership numbers over the last few years and Kiwanis recognizes the need for creating greater awareness among members about the significant impact Kiwanis service projects make at the local level as well as internationally.    The solution lies in greater awareness of the good things Kiwanis members do.

In response to a question about the return on investment for clubs in Division and District monetary support , the Governor pointed out a number of important elements that members don’t often see.  Kiwanis Districts provide training opportunities for new club officers.  They also work with clubs to make sure they have all the resources they need to carry out the Kiwanis mission.  A key service is providing guidance and assistance in setting up new clubs and new service leadership programs (Key Club, CKI, Builders Club, Aktion Club and Kiwanis Kids).  They also provide an avenue for training and education of SLP officers.  And there are 16 District committees working to assist clubs in various projects and activities.   According to Governor Dudey, perhaps the most important thing that the District and Division provides is a channel for exchanging ideas and experience - the communication of lessons learned-that provides a knowledge bank for club leaders.  The assembled club presidents agreed that they needed to work harder at making sure club members are aware of the larger Kiwanis picture.

According to District 23 Lieutenant Governor Scott Zimmerman, "There were 20 Kiwanis Leaders from Division 23 who attended the meeting with Governor Don.    Division 23 Key Club Lt. Governor Danielle Tassara also sat in. Great questions were asked and good information was shared. The impact that the Kiwanis Family makes in Division 23 is significant and ongoing. Every current member of Kiwanis and every new member of Kiwanis represents two more hands with which to give service guided by a Kiwanis Heart."
