Club of Denbigh Supports Local Womens Home
by Jim Russell
The Kiwanis Club of Denbigh is a small group that benefits the community in a large way. From building a picnic shelter for the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula, building wheelchair ramps for local families in need, to giving out over 1000 free books to local children through the Joy of Reading Program, Denbigh Kiwanians make a huge difference in the lives of many local children and families.
Recently, the club was happy to contribute to the Menchville House which serves local women and their children in transition, offering shelter, hope and resources to face life with new coping skills, strength and determination. The club very much believes in the work that the Menchville house does to help women and their children who, for one reason or another, need help to get back on their feet after facing a life changing challenge.
Menchville House is a place where women learn to defeat old behaviors with spiritual, vocational counseling and lifestyle adaptation assistance, gaining assurance and self-esteem, which helps them to function as an independent person. This assistance also greatly benefits their children which is a large focus of the Denbigh Kiwanis club's goals. James Russell, president of the Kiwanis Club of Denbigh states, (that) "we are pleased to be able to offer this assistance to Menchville House and appreciate the great work they do in the community for women and children. Our contribution of $2,000 will help the Menchville House in its efforts and we hope they will continue to serve the Denbigh area. I also hope that other groups will be able to step up and give so that local women can rebound from some of the unavoidable challenges thrown in their path".
