Kiwanis
Club of Virginia Beach-Combers
by Bobby Towsend
The Beach-Combers Kiwanis Club in Virginia Beach, a "Golden
Age" club, recently held its 12th Annual 'Chipping in for Children' Charity Golf
Tournament at the Eagle Haven Golf Course, located on the
Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Through the generous
support of our hole sponsors and proceeds from a raffle
for a set of Callaway golf clubs, the tournament raised
$7700
in support of the Club's designated charities. Judged a
big success, sixty-seven golfers participated in this year's
best-ball event.
The Beach-Combers plan to pick up the bells again this fall,
when they volunteer each Saturday between Thanksgiving and
Chistmas as bell ringers for the local Salvation Army. In
addition, the Beach-Combers have a long standing affiliation
with the Virginia Beach Meals on Wheels program, regularly
volunteering to deliver meals throughout the city. Pictured
below is Beach-Comber Ian Goodwin, as he prepares to drop
off a meal.
The Beach-Combers currently number 45 members with an average
age between 79-80 years - but they have fun at what they're
doing.
