Rehoboth
Kiwanis Club Introduces New Kiwanis Family Member
by Rosemary Cummings
In November, the McCabe Family received the Kiwanian of the Month award for their work and support as a Family to Rehoboth Kiwanis programs. For both Brian McCabe, a former Key Club member who joined the Rehoboth Club last year and his wife Lisa, new to Kiwanis this year, their commitment to service is already apparent. Lisa grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and received her Bachelor's from Slippery Rock University in Elementary and Special Education where she also met her future husband, Brian. They have a five-year-old daughter named Cassie. Lisa has been teaching for seven years on and off, in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Maryland, and now Delaware where the McCabe's make their home. Lisa related her prior service, "doing a lot of volunteer work in High School, as well as college. When I say a lot I mean a lot". Starting in Middle School, she volunteered at a nursing home, won an award for the most hours, and volunteered at a local hospital. She joined clubs that did volunteer work including Special Olympics, working community events, collecting and donating gifts to those in need. As part of a youth group, she worked with habitat for humanity, sold cookies for the hungry, and went around helping the elderly or disabled clean their houses. In college, she was in a Service Sorority where they were constantly did service and were required to have so many hours to be a member. Lisa noted, "Wow, thinking about it now I am amazed at the amount of service I did do back then and the lack of service that our children do now". Last school year, Lisa served as assistant Faculty Advisor for the new Indian River Key Club and in September, she agreed to become the Advisor when the school assigned the other teacher new duties. Her previous service career already shows signs of repeating history, as she volunteers for Rehoboth Kiwanis community service events, often bringing daughter Cassie with her. Kiwanis welcomes Lisa and her commitment to service and to our children. Pictured is the McCabe family (Cassie, Lisa, Frank, and Brian).
