Kiwanis Holds Benefit Concert for Blue Ridge Area Food
Bank
by Patty May
Harrisonburg Kiwanis Member Mary Rouse organized a benefit
concert to help the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank on Friday,
Nov. 21. She says, "This is the first benefit concert we
have given. Five of us have been rehearsing together weekly
for several years. We have performed in my studio many times.
First Night was our first public concert to a full house
at Asbury Methodist. With the help of a grant from the Arts
Council, we arranged for a second piano and did a major concert
in May at Massanutten Presbyterian Church to a good sized
audience."
More than 250 people attended the concert, which was held at Bridgewater Church of the Brethren. Total donations of $1,590 were collected, as well as 276 pounds of food for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
Ms. Rouse reports, "The audience was very receptive and is asking when and where we will do it again. Conditions were not ideal, since the pianos really did not match in size or temperament. It was exciting to share the program with John Barr and the young pianists. . . Bridgewater Church was kind to allow us use of space and instruments rent free for a cause they support."
