Linda Tyler Named Reading Volunteer of the Year for Newport News Reading Council

Linda Tyler is a retired reading specialist who as part of the Kiwanis Club of Tabb, Volunteers her time in the first grade classroom of Mrs. Pamela Bohnke at Tabb Elementary School, Yorktown, Virginia. Her arrival on Wednesdays is greatly anticipated by all the children in Mrs. Bohnke Class. Mrs. Tyler often stays well past her allotted time so any child waiting to read with her is not disappointed. Accelerator Reader scores for these children have shown a real increase in comprehension and reading level. Mrs. Tyler gives the children the extra one-on-one attention needed to increase their fluency and more importantly their confidence. Because of her time and grace, children who struggled earlier see them selves now as readers. In addition to the weekly one-on-one reading and tutoring, Mrs. Tyler has read favorite stories to the class as a whole. Mrs. Tyler gives not only her time and wisdom, but has given these children and instilled in them a real love of reading that will help them as they learn and grow well past the first grade.
