Wilmington Club Turns 90
by Dick Holmes
It was quite a party as
Wilmington, Delaware Kiwanians gathered in the DuBarry
Room of the Hotel DuPont on January 7 , 2009 to celebrate
90 years of service to the Wilmington community. Guest
speaker was Ted Ganse, Governor of the Capitol District.
The club honored Wilmington's Firefighter of The Year
and the Police Officer of the Year, chosen from quarterly
honorees during 2008. After a delightful dinner of
Seafood bisque, filet mignon, potatoes and veggies,
the Anniversary cake was rolled into the dining room,
candles burning brightly at the top. Some of the children
present were given the chance to blow out the candles.
Robert Hallsted (right), age 93, was saluted as the
Oldest Active Kiwanian in the club, being a member for
50
years. Governor Ganse's message: If other clubs can
double their membership, so can Wilmington, and it
would be nice to see the club return to the days when
they had over a hundred active members.
