Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis Club Supports Special Olympics

by Rosemary Cummings

Rehoboth Beach Kiwanian, Art Pressl's shirt said it all. Since before 1993, the Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis Club has been preparing the luncheon treat for the Special Olympians attending the Annual Delaware Families Fishing Day at the Beach Tournament. The local Delaware Mobile Surf Fishermen Association at the Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier provide the bait, fishing equipment and volunteers with the Kiwanians, along with the Rehoboth Beach Lions Club and Rising Star Masonic Lodge members work together to cook hamburgers and hot dogs and prepare a lunch bag for the anglers when they return from the tournament at Noon. Jim Kunkle had his initiation cooking hamburgers and dogs, while Bill Matt kept the group going with his jokes and organization skills. The youngest volunteer was high school student, Nick Christenson now a seasoned sandwich wrapper and ready for McDonald's or Wendy's employment. After lunch, many families took a ride on the nearby Lewes ferry across the Delaware Bay to Cape May. Kiwanians look forward to this special day, not matter what the weather or the wind velocity. Weather cancelled the Tournament only once in 17 years.
