Council Club "Parking at the Park"
by Kathy Jackson
Members of Council Kiwanis Club, along with the local Fire Department, volunteered their time to help park cars for a local high school event. Council High School was the host of the Black Diamond District high school basketball tournaments on Friday night and Saturday, February 19 & 20, 2010. Due to the number of high school teams involved in the district tournament games, the vast number of spectators attending, and limited parking, school officials decided to run a school bus shuttle back and forth from the school grounds to William P. Harris Recreational Park, about one mile from the school. This allowed spectators to easily park and ride, without having to walk a long distance or worry about being blocked in by other vehicles when they were ready to leave. Once all the school parking was filled to capacity, traffic was directed to the local Park and then spectators were shuttled back to the school. Three school buses were continually running the shuttle so everyone was able to come and go as needed. Over 100 cars were "parked at the Park," and everyone was well pleased with the smooth traffic flow.
Temperatures during this event hovered between 30 and 40 degrees. Kiwanian, Gary Jackson, decked out in warm clothing and a safety vest, can be seen in one of the pictures where he was directing parking.
