Richmond Club Fund Raiser for Virginia Voice
By Andrew Price
The Virginia Voice Committee of the Kiwanis Club of Richmond wrapped up its annual fundraiser in August with a two-fold objective of sending inner-city youth to a Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball game and raising money for the Virginia Voice for the Print Handicapped.
Based on receipts to date, the event raised $3,260 from donations from members, and the committee is still accepting donations if you haven't had a chance to make one. Also, we are awaiting a final figure from our matching gift. This helped send more than 200 children to a fireworks night at a sold-out game on August 25th. Some of the children threw out a first pitch and participated in on-field contests between innings. Leaders of some of the groups reported that this was the first baseball game some of their youth have attended.
The Virginia Voice Committee greatly appreciates those of you who helped our fundraiser on such short notice. In recent years we had partnered with the University of Richmond for one of their football games but, with their move to a new stadium, we discovered it was not as good a venue for our fundraiser. That's when we decided to work with the Flying Squirrels, and we enjoyed our relationship with them. We are looking forward to attempting this project again next spring.
