The Kiwanis Club of Christiansbsurg recently awarded one thousand dollar scholarships to three eserving students at Christiansburg High School. This scholarship was created approximately 18 years ago and was initially named the Shifflet Memorial Scholarship in honor of our last surviving charter member who died in 1990. It has since be renamed the Kiwanis Memorial Scholarship in memory of all deceased members of the club. Students were recently recognized and presented their scholarships by our club President at the school's annual awards. Pictured, Pres. Teddy McCracken presents Ashley Altis and Taylor Whitaker with their awards. Not shown is recepient Celsea Hodges.

The Kiwanis club of Fairfax is excited to announce the awarding of a $2500 grant from the Chocolate Lover's Festival of Fairfax City to support of Meals for Young Minds project at Providence Elementary School. This project provides 6 meals each weekend to children who would otherwise go hungry. Children are identified by teachers and guidance counselors - and receive a gallon bag of 6 meals to take home each Friday. We currently provide food for 12-15 children but with the grant are working to expand the number of children served. The grant was awarded on Tuesday, May 24, at the Fairfax City Council Meeting. The club is also encouraged by the awarding of a $2500 grant from the Capital District Kiwanis Foundation which will also allow us to serve more hungry children at our local elementary schools.

Westminster
Kiwanis Honors Fallen Heroes. Members of the Kiwanis Club of Westminster, Maryland participated in the Memorial Day Parade and Exercises on May 30, 2011.  The Memorial Day celebrations were the 144th annual honoring of citizens who served in the armed forces and memorializing those military personnel who gave their lives to protect, defend and perpetuate the United States of America.  The celebration of Memorial Day in Westminster, Maryland began in 1867, two years after the conclusion of the Civil War, and is the longest continuous Memorial Day celebration in the United States.

Members of the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club
(MVKC) collected food donations from generous customers of the Hollin Hall Safeway on Fort Hunt Road from 9:00-5:00 on Saturday, May 28. Actual figures are not yet available, but usually this event, done 5 times per year, brings in over 1200 pounds of food and several hundred dollars in donations to UCM, which is used to purchase more food. The food is quickly distributed by UCM's Food Pantry to hungry families in our community. The photo shows MVKC members Lt-Col Perry Leonard on left and Dr. Donald Reynolds loading the UCM truck with cartons of food donations. The next MVKC Food Drive will be on Saturday, July 30. The MVKC is always seeking volunteers for this event and other programs of community service.

One of the most successful organizations for youth in the Towson-Timonium, MD, area is the Lutherville-Timonium Recreation Council, which makes organized sports and other activities available to the area's children.  Several members of the Kiwanis Club of Towson-Timonium have had their children participate in LTRC programs over the years, and some have coached teams.  So, the Kiwanis Club of Towson-Timonium is proud to sponsor two sports teams this Spring - Girls Softball Clinic, ages 7-8, the Terps; and Boys Baseball ages 13-14, the Athletics.  Members of our Club have attended some of the games to see the youth and the many adult volunteers who make it all happen.

Joe Brake proudly sponsored his wife, Regina, as she was inducted as Coastal Delaware's newest Kiwanian.  When Regina retired from the National Park Service last year she said she would consider joining the Club after she got her retired life organized.  During that time, she helped with food drives, invited friends to meetings, took part in fundraisers,  and helped at fireworks parking and even attended Kiwanis conventions with Joe. Now she wears her K pin and Kiwanis cap.
Welcome, Regina!!
