Sec/Treas Ellis Stroup Retires

Retiring with over 36 years service as Secretary/Treasurer of the Capital District Kiwanis, Ellis Stroup was honored with numerous heartfelt testimonials during the 2011 District Convention recently held in Williamsburg, VA. For his dedicated service, Ellis also received a Life Membership in the Capital District, and was awarded the title "Capital District Secretary/Treasurer Emeritus." In addition, an annual $5K "Ellis H. Stroup Key Club Leadership Scholarship" has been established in his honor. (L to R) Dave Maloney (eBuilder Editor) presents Ellis with his plaque.

Eliminate Project Supporters Recognized with ZELLER!

Named in honor of a 1940s founder of the Kiwanis International Foundation, philanthropist Walter Zeller, the Walter Zeller Fellowship award recognizes individuals who support The Eliminate Project with a gift of $1250. During the 2011 DCON, several new Eliminate Project supporters were recognized with their Walter Zeller Fellowship award. Other than three or four meetings in September, my year as your Governor is winding down. It has been an interesting year and one that has been dedicated to making the Captial District a little better on September 30, 2011 than it was when I assumed the mantle of Governor on October 1, 2010. We had a positive membership growth at the end of July; however, it is going to take a lot of work to remain positive through the end of this administrative year...more

Kiwanis Club of Elkton Doll Project

The Kiwanis Club of Elkton offered the opportunity for Capital District Convention attendees in Williamsburg to work on a service project between events. The doll project provides dolls to local medical facilities in the Elkton area so that doctors can show the children by drawing on the dolls what procedures the child may be having....more

New Capital District Secretary/Treasurer no Stranger to the Job

With the retirement of long-time Sec/Treas Ellis Stroup, effective October 1, 2011 Governor Tom Varner (right) will become the first new Secretary/Treasurer of the Capital District in over 36 years. At the 2011 DCON installation of officers ceremony, Kiwanis International Counselor Jane Erickson presented Tom with two pair of bulky athletic sox so that he might be better able to fill the big shoes left behind by outgoing Sec/Treas Ellis. "No one can fill Ellis’ shoes, but I will use all the skills and talents I have to be the best District Secretary/Treasurer that I can be," said Tom. ...more
