New Capital District Secretary/Treasurer Tom Varner no Stranger to the Job

With the retirement of long-time Sec/Treas Ellis Stroup, effective October 1, 2011 Governor Tom Varner will become the first new Secretary/Treasurer of the Capital District in over 36 years. At the 2011 DCON installation of officers ceremony, Kiwanis International Counselor Jane Erickson presented Tom with two pair of bulky athletic sox so that he might be better able to fill the big shoes left behind by outgoing Sec/Treas Ellis. "No one can fill Ellis' shoes, but I will use all the skills and talents I have to be the best District Secretary/Treasurer that I can be," said Tom.

This will not be Tom's first venture as either a Secretary or as Treasurer. For almost 20 years, he was the Secretary/Treasurer for the Virginia Association of Criminal Justice Educators. In that role, in addition to the normal secretarial tasks, Tom was also responsible for scheduling and arranging for the annual convention, including taking care of the its finances, registrations, program, etc.

Additionally, Tom has served as Treasurer of his church including approving and paying all bills and preparing the monthly and annual financial statements. For four years, Tom has also served as Treasurer of his Masonic Lodge.

Tom's most relevant Kiwanis secretarial experience was as Secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Ashland for total of 15 years, and for the past ten years he has served as  Assistant Capital District Secretary

"It's my desire to make the Captial District communications systems as user-friendly as humanly possible," said Tom. "With a lot of work and input from the membership, we can get this done.
Thanks to the Selection Committee and the District's Board of Trustees for giving me this opportunity to continue my Kiwanis service to the Capital District," he continued.
