by Stephen Korving
On Thursday, June 4, the Churchland Kiwanis Club awarded five local students with $1,000 college scholarships. The graduates (shown in the picture from left to right) are: Samantha A. Menniti (Churchland HS), who will be attending Longwood University; Victoria F. Owen (Western Branch HS), who will be attending George Mason University; Seth B. Sawyer (Stonebridge Upper School), who will be attending Virginia Tech; Jessica M. Smith (Western Branch HS), who will be attending Longwood University; and Natalie R. Nethery (Western Branch HS), who will be attending George Mason University.
The awards were given during a special program at our regular Thursday morning breakfast meeting. The families of the students as well as some of their teachers and mentors also attended the ceremony.
The Churchland Kiwanis Club wishes to thank all of those clubs and individuals who attend our annual Silent Auction & Reverse Raffle fundraiser, which allows us to fund the scholarships that we give to these deserving young people. We encourage you join us again at this year's Silent Auction & Reverse Raffle, which will be held Friday evening, October 23, 2009 at St. Therese Catholic Church. Please call Jerry Brown (757-484-5062) for tickets or information.
