Woodbridge Kiwanis Club and NOVA CKI Support Salvation Army Kettle Program
by Herb Tiede
Our Club, along with members of the NOVA Community College CKI, supported the Salvation Army Kettle Program for 2010 and collected $6,232.11. For the record, we logged 156 hours of bell ringing in spite of some severe cold, snowy and windy days. Note: CKI contributed 18 of the total hours logged. By being a volunteer supporters we saved the Salvation Army $1.248 in bell ringing fees.
To all who participated, thank you for you willing and cheerful support. All should be proud of a very worthy campaign to help the needy and unfortunate among us.
As the coordinator of the Kiwanis effort I was assisted by a new and very useful web based program called "Sign Up Genius". This program is free and allows you to build sign up lists for volunteers on particular shifts over and range of some 8 weeks. This tool was invaluable in keeping track of who signed up for what and when. After they signed up they received reminder notices they had the duty in two days. Hilda Chadwick, our local Salvation Army representative, used this program every day. She checked what Kiwanis was scheduled for and then made arrangements for hired personnel to fill in the vacancies. I wholeheartedly recommend this program for all Kiwanian organizations - it's great!
