Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club

by Bruce Malkin

The Sacramento Neighborhood Center commemorated the MLK Jr. holiday with a special leadership program and a community brunch on Monday, January 17. The Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club (MVKC), a staunch supporter of the work of the Sacramento Neighborhood Center (SNC), especially in creating a safe and healthy environment for the community's teenagers in TeenSpace, was one of the groups to participate in the commemoration program for Dr. King. The MVKC was represented by Past President Bruce Malkin and Co-Secretary Joanne Malkin, and they described to the gathered residents and students what the MVKC does to support the SNC all year long, especially by funding TeenSpace activities by paying for trips to museums, theaters, farms, and summer camps. For more information on MVKC service activities in the Mount Vernon area, see www.mtvernonvakiwanis.org or its FaceBook page or contact brucemalkin1@gmail.com.

On Saturday, January 15, four members of the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club participated in a one-day Kiwanis Capital District Mid-Winter Conference held at the Carteret Boys and Girls Club Building in Manassas. After the opening session addressed by Capital District Governor Tom Varney and Governor-Elect Jeff Wolff, the morning was filled with educational workshops on practical issues, like how to recruit and retain new members. After lunch, a final workshop focused on Kiwanis student clubs, and MVKC Past Presidents Paul Mehler and Bruce Malkin presented a video and spoke on how they were able to establish a K-Kids Club at Stratford Landing Elementary School and a Builders Club at Carl Sandburg Middle School.

On January 5 after dinner at the Mount Vernon Country Club, Jason Linett, Certified Hypnotist, fascinated the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club with his presentation of what hypnosis is and what it is not, what it can do and what it cannot. With some brief practical examples, he had the audience quickly thinking about the many improvements that hypnotism could make on their daily lives. After a lively question nand answer period, MVKC President, Kahan Dhillon, presented Jason with a token gift of appreciation (at least that is what Kahan thinks he did; who knows?). Join the MVKC and hear interesting speakers as well as improve our community. See www.mtvernonvakiwanis.org or e-mail brucemalkin1@gmail.com
