Kiwanis Club of Capitol Hill Celebrates 48 Years!

by Janice E. MacKinnon

The focus was on the youth at the 48th Annual Awards and Charter Celebration of the Kiwanis Club of Capitol Hill on Saturday, September 24th. A packed room at the Washington Navy Yard enjoyed good food, good company and good service. President Marilyn M. Franklin was installed for her second year as President of the Club, as was the incoming Board of Director. Honor was paid to late members Billy Chatmon and Phil Flowe. And, the awards! there many, including a donation to the Ronald McDonald House in honor of Phil Flowe. Baxter Gee was named Kiwanian of the Year reflecting his great work at the Southeast White House and his many hours of service as a Kiwanian.

But the show was stolen by the youth who were there. Members of the Stuart Hobson Middle School Builders Club sang "We are the World", 15 year old pianist Quinten Alexander Harrell performed three selections. And, representing the organizing effort to create a Key Club at the Eastern Senior High School, was Andrew Lee. All the students were beautiful, performed well, conducted themselves beautifully. It was a joy to see as well as a confirmation of the message presented by keynote speaker, Rev. Dr. Lewis Anthony: "old stuff still works". Rev. Anthony held up these youngsters as good examples of how the old adages of parenting and childrearing "still work".

Kiwanis Leadership

The end of a Kiwanis Administrative Year brings, and should bring, recognition of jobs well done as well as a welcome to new leadership. We offer our full support of the 2011-2012 Kiwanis Leadership Team. Division 17’s Lieutenant Governor Joyce Sharon had a novel idea and coordinated that well with her club presidents. She asked them to review their year and select a club member for the “Unsung Hero’s Award” to be given to a Kiwanian who demonstrated outstanding leadership and consistent service to their clubs...more
