The "K-Family Weekend" Brings Together the Key Club & CKI Boards with Kiwanis Leadership Team
a Photo Essay by Immediate Past Governor Bob Cressy

Have you ever been on a "K-Family Weekend"? You'd never forget it, I'll tell you. Just what is a K-Family weekend anyway? Well, its definition is really the Kiwanis Family Weekend. Its purpose is to gather the current Key Club Board, the CKI Board and the new Kiwanis leadership team, especially all of the 2008-2009 Lieutenant Governors, SLP advisors and K-Family Governors. They assemble for most of three days to work and play together, to share ideas, plans and to get to know one another while coordinating their goals. more or view event photo album

Rehoboth Beach Celebrates 80th Anniversary
by Rosemary Cummings

The Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis Club celebrated its 80th Anniversary, using the occasion to recognize members' accomplishments over many years. Gov. Art Riley presented the Legion of Merit to long-time members, PLG Ray Wilson (1969) and Jay Wingate, recognizing them for 45 and 47 years as Kiwanians, and then presented Pres-Elect Ken Drerup the Human and Spiritual Aims Award. Gov. Riley presented Past President James G. Horn, grandson and son of the club's charter members, as a recipient of the prestigious George Hixson Award for his many years of service. The new Awardee and Gov Riley then surprised President Cummings when they also presented her with a Hixson Award. The Club now has awarded eight Hixson's. Then Past Gov Bob Cressy stepped to podium to present Past President George Blacklock and Secretary Rosemary Cummings with the Distinguished Club awards for 2006-07. Past Gov Cressy also recognized PLG Rose Poole as Distinguished Lt. Governor for her service. PLG Poole, representing the Seaford Club, which sponsored the Rehoboth Club in 1928, presented the Rehoboth Club with the banner and flag in opening ceremonies.

Club President Rosemary Cummings, after recognizing the eleven 2007-08 Kiwanians of the Month, announced James Kunkle as Kiwanian of the Year. Lt. Gov. Allan Kujala then officiated at the installation of officers and directors for 2008-09. Gov Riley and LTG Kujala rounded out the evening's festivities with an impressive induction of new member, Julie Beebe. Ms. Beebe said, "her induction as part of the 80th Anniversary ceremonies would be memorable for her".

Trustee Walt Rudy and his wife representing the Bridgeville Club used the occasion to give his farewell, as he completed his three-year tem of office as Trustee of Delmarva Region. Dale Collins of the Elkton Club becomes Trustee October 1. President Shirley Dennis and President-Elect Wayne Wilson, along with other club members represented the Georgetown Club. Representatives of the Wilmington Club made the long trip to attend, reminiscent of many Interclubs the two clubs made over the past years. The program not only included the charter member names, Club presidents, but a short history of the Club, among its accomplishments was the start of the Cape-May Ferry, the Sussex County YMCA, an ambulance donated to Rehoboth Beach, medical equipment donated to Beebe Hospital, and sponsorship of Boy Scout Troop 85 since 1930. The Club sponsors two Key Clubs and two K-Kids Clubs in the area and is poised to grow in the coming year.
