Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City

by David Landis

Kiwanis Awards Scholarships

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City works diligently all year long to raise the funds for its Scholarship Foundation which culminates in the awarding of scholarships to local deserving high school seniors annually. On Wednesday May 25th, thirteen seniors at Stephen Decatur High School received the 2011 scholarships.

Pictured (L to R) are recipients: Jenna Bower (to attend Haverford College) who received the Community Service Grant; India O'Boyle (Salisbury University) who received the Memorial Nursing Grant; Brook Harmen (Salisbury University); Bryan "Bry " Bishop (High Point University); Nicole Carpenter (James Madison University); Rachel Thompson (University of Delaware); Emily Cieri (High Point University); Madelyn Justice (Shippensburg University); Lauren Holloway (Christopher Newport University); Gabrielle Anthony (Salisbury University); Danielle Lang (Virginia Tech); Taylor Tobak (York College); and Rachel Slotter (Salisbury University).

It was also noted that Rachel Slotter had served her community in many ways, and especially for Kiwanis. Her Kiwanis Key Club peers elected her the Capital District Governor for the 2010 -2011 year. The Capital District is comprised of Key Clubs from DC, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia and has over 14,000 members. An outstanding leadership achievement.

Also pictured at the podium are Don Brisbane, Chairman of the Financial Aid Committee of the Kiwanis Foundation of Ocean Pines/Ocean City (left), and Kiwanis Club of Greater OP/OC President Roy Foreman (right), both of whom presented the awards.

A big THANK YOU to the local community which continues to support the Kiwanis Club and its fundraisers. The next event will be the Summer Pancake Breakfast on Saturday July 9th at the Ocean Pines Community Center from 7 until 11 AM. Currently there is a Car Raffle on the Ocean City Boardwalk to raise funds from Springfest until Sunfest when the 2012 Red Mustang Convertible will be awarded on Sunday September 25th. Look for a couple of Hot Dog Sales in Ocean Pines on June 18th and July 4th. The Annual Duck Race chances are also on sale now for the Saturday September 10th race at Frontier Town. A busy schedule for a great purpose. Kiwanis: "Serving the Children of the World".

Newest Member of Kiwanis Inducted

Pictured (L to R) are Pat Winkelmayer, Membership Chair, inductee Jane Slotter, and Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City President Roy Foreman as the club's newest member is welcomed at the June 1st meeting in the Ocean Pines Community Center.  Roy is also Jane's sponsor.

Jane is a native of Baltimore where she graduated from Parkville High School.  Twenty years ago she moved to Ocean Pines where her two children, Josh and Rachel, were raised.  Jane retired in 2000 from Verizon, which had been known as Bell Atlantic when she began her career.  She soon found other interests and became an Education Assistant at the Berlin Intermediate School in Berlin, Maryland where she has worked for the last 7 years.  It was there Jane first learned about Kiwanis as BIS has a Kiwanis Builders Club with which she worked.  In addition, her daughter, Rachel, became a member of the Kiwanis Key Club at Stephen Decatur High School and was elected to the position of Capital District Governor for her senior year of 2010 -2011.  Most fitting, Jane is now the newest member of the local Kiwanis Club.  On this same day, Jane will attend her daughter's graduation from SDHS.  A pretty special day for the Slotter Family and Kiwanis.

Berlin Chamber of Commerce Visits Kiwanis Club

Pictured is the Director of the Berlin Maryland Chamber of Commerce, Olive Mayer, as she informs the members of the Kiwanis Club of greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City about the new Berlin Chamber office at 14 S. Main Street and upcoming events. Every second Friday there is an Arts Show where local artists display their work and entertain the crowd. On July 8th the Annual Bathtub Race will start at 5 PM from the Chamber office and race down Main Street. August is the Peach Festival. September 23 through 25 is the 19th Annual Fiddlers Convention, and October is Cruisers on the 8th and Oktoberfest on the 15th, to name a few events. Berlin as a quaint town in Wocester County where there's always something nice happening.

Scholarship Winners Thank Kiwanis

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines- Ocean City works year round to raise scholarship funds which are awarded every year to local deserving high school seniors. This year 13 scholarships were awarded at Stephen Decatur High School on May 25th.

Among the winners were Rachel Slotter, pictured thanking the Kiwanians at the June 15th meeting in Ocean City at Hall's Restaurant while club President Roy Foreman and club Programs and Speakers Chairman Graham Caldwell look on from her right.. Rachel, who was a member of the Kiwanis Key Club at SDHS, led the Capital District Keys Clubs as the Capital District Governor this past school year and will be attending Salisbury University this fall majoring in Business and Biology which she plans will lead her to becoming a doctor.

On June 29th, Gabrielle Anthony, pictured with her grandfather Don Brisbane, spoke to the club at the Ocean Pines Community Center weekly meeting about her plans to attend Salisbury University this fall where she will major in Elementary Education and Theater Arts. Many locals might recognize her from the Snow Cone stand across from Pines Plaza where she works after waitressing earlier in the day at Melia's Restaurant in Ocean City. Gabrielle accomplished much at SDHS, among which was the National Honor Society, a cumulative 4.7083 GPA, a member of Key Club, Varsity and JV Cheerleading, a member of the golf and track teams, and performing in school plays and talent shows, to name a few.

Thanks to the support of Kiwanis events by the community, such as the upcoming Pancake Breakfast on July 9th at the Ocean Pines Community Center from 7 - 11 AM, funding of these most valued scholarships is possible.
