Mount Vernon Club Speakers

by Bruce Malkin

(Above) On Wednesday, January 6, the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club (MVKC) hosted two excellent albeit different speakers at its dinner meeting at the Mount Vernon Country Club. Starting off was Ian Warren, an Eagle Scout candidate from Fort Washington, Md. As a final part of his extensive requirements to reach the level of Eagle Scout, Ian was invited to do his public speaking effort to the MVKC. His presentation on "Preventing Crime in the Community" was thoughtful and practical. He gave specific recommendations to safeguard us from home burglaries, car theft, and identity theft. His poised and positive manner was a tribute both to him personally as well as to Boy Scouts in general.

(Above) The other Guest Speaker that night was Carolyn Richar (with Bruce Malkin), President of the Fairfax Kiwanis Club and an official of Capital Hospice Center. She outlined in simple yet elegant fashion the need for and the ability of the Kiwanis International organization to resolve some of the issues of child and maternity care in developing countries. She asked us to support her efforts to expand the concept of free rural health clinics from the one she is successfully involved in located in El Salvador to others in Latin America and later to Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where millions of children and young mothers die every year for lack of basic health care.
