This Veteran’s Day 2010 dawned sunny and comfortably cool with a clear blue sky on this 51st Annual Observance by Kiwanis and the American Legion. We gather again to honor those who served in wars and peacetime in the services of the United States of America. Such services were conducted in many communities, yet we wish that all Americans would take the time to say “Thank you for your Service” to our veterans. more

Two ends are fast approaching - the end of the second month of the Kiwanis year and the end of 2010. It is a time to begin assessing what the District is doing, make some changes, and renew efforts to help the District to develop a long-range succession plan throughout the District....more

As usual at the end of the selling at noon, the generous farmers and vendors donated hundreds of pounds of fresh produce to both UCM's Food Pantry and to Mondloch House, a shelter for families run by New Hope Housing.  The Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club sends volunteers every week from May through November to help UCM collect and receive this vital fresh food source. Again this year, UCM hosted a free luncheon in nthe library for the vendors and volunteers at the end of the season's market, and Christine Fiske, UCM's Volunter Coordinator, expressed the deep appreciation UCM has for this great service to the hungry families in our community.  Above, Pam Beggan (on left), Rich Keil, and MVKC Farmers' Market Program Coordinator for MVKC Joanne Malkin holding boxes of some of the 600 pounds on average of fine fresh produce that will soon be transported to UCM and then distributed to its needy clients.
For the seventy-eighth year, the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville will be selling Christmas trees to earn money to support club service projects mainly benefiting children and youth. This year Key Clubbers from the five Key Clubs in the Charlottesville area and young service leaders from CKI at the University of Virginia joined with Kiwanians for three successive sessions making and decorating wreaths....more

On November 19, a dozen Kiwanis K-Kids from the Stratford Landing Elementary School club visited Paul Spring Retirement Community on Fort Hunt Road to give each resident a home-made Thanksgiving turkey decoration. The seniors were delighted with the opportunity to talk to the children as well as to receive their thoughtful presents. ...more

The Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club (MVKC) has been coooperating with the Fairfax County's Reading is FUNdamental (RIF) program for several years by purchasing and distributing new books to pre-kinder children in our area. ...more
